Our History

For nearly a century members of The Hoults Group have been serving the needs of people and businesses on the move. Now part of the international relocations removals group SIRVA, we have a further reach with global resources, which enables us to provide seamless door to door moving services with our associated companies worldwide. The Hoults Group, a nationwide network of individual companies, has access to a modern fleet of over 350 vehicles.

Hoults

Our reputation was established in 1917 when Edward Hoults of Newcastle Upon Tyne purchased his first horse drawn van. Hoults was soon expanding, and later joined forces with Freeborn and Son, one of North London’s leading removal companies, specialising in quality removals and storage with local removals via horse drawn pantechnicons and distance removals by railway.

In 1968 Hoults expanded to the Nottingham area with the takeover of Nolans, which at the time was based on Huntingdon Street in the city centre. From there, the branch relocated to Colwick and then in 1987 moved to a purpose built office with extensive warehouse facilities in Hucknall. As part of The Hoults Group, the branch in Nottingham covers the whole of the Midlands.

Covering Scotland with a network of branches is Hoults of Glasgow, established in the late 1960s having changed its name from The Union Transit Company who served the Glasgow community for several decades. With experience of over 30 years in the heart of Scottish Industry we have enjoyed an excellent reputation for quality removals on local, national and international markets.

Richardson & Spicer

Continuing to expand its network around the country The Hoults Group later acquired Gloucestershire based removal company Richardson & Spicer. At the time Richardson & Spicer was a very successful haulage company and counted Selfridges and Sotheby’s among its clientele. It was the merging of Richardson & Spicer and Hoults & Freeborns that created the distinctive and recognisable brands for the Hoults Group - the green and gold livery and Hoults Crown logo.

Trenchards

The next member of the Group to be acquired was Trenchards of Bournemouth. Trenchards was a well-known and reputable company, which had provided a range of services, from local moves throughout Dorset and Hampshire to major relocations throughout the world since 1919.  Trenchards had built a professional reputation as one of the country’s most specialised removers by caring for customers and their belongings with a commitment to always providing a move of the highest quality whatever its size or distance.

Hiltons

Hiltons Removals, was founded way back in 1882 as part of George Hilton & Son of Haywards Heath, West Sussex. House furnishers, undertakers and furniture removers. George Hilton was a local businessman who also founded the building of a Methodist Church, Sponsorship of the Haywards Heath town band and football club.  Since 1882 Hilton Removals has been providing a first class removals service to discerning individuals and their families in Surrey, Sussex and surrounding areas. Transport may have come a long way since the humble horse drawn carriages and steam engines, but Hiltons Removals has stayed true to the traditional value associated with time gone by – respect and courtesy. George Hiltons & Sons remained a family business until 1986 when The Hoults Group purchased the removals and warehouse operation.

Originating from the prestigious Army & Navy Stores, for over 100 years A&N has been taking care of the home and moving needs of individuals and families alike. Having joined The Hoults Group, A&N continues to build on its existing professional reputation as one of the country’s leading removers by caring for customers and their belongings, a value that is embraced throughout the Hoults Group by each local company.

Pitt & Scott

Pitt & Scott has been providing high quality removal and storage services in West London for more than 100 years and has built a solid reputation based on excellent customer service and removals expertise. Pitt & Scott's reputation extends to the antiques industry where the company is well known for its expertise in handling antiques, works of art and fragile artefacts. Today as part of the Hoults Group, Pitt & Scott offers local, national and international moving services, as well as business, storage and commercial moving.
