About Peterlee
Peterlee is a town situated in County Durham and is named after a resident of East Durham named Peter Lee. Lee was a miners’ leader, Methodist preacher, local councillor and trade unionist, who was an extremely celebrated member of the community. The town’s culture was mainly centred around the mining industry, until that closed down, however the heritage has not been lost, and the people of Peterlee work hard to maintain it. Many lodge banners have managed to be restored by local colleges, which are a reminder of the many mines which used to be present in the area. These are carried at the Miner’s Gala, which takes place every year.
