Summer is now here, which means peak moving season is just around the corner. This is the most popular time of the year for people to move home due to the school summer holidays and the more reliable weather.

Just because the majority of people choose to move at this time, that doesn't mean it will be easy. To make sure your summer move goes as smoothly as possible, we have put together a list of our top tips and things that are worth considering when planning to move in the upcoming months.

Hire a moving company well in advance

If you are looking for help during your move and are planning on calling on a removal company to do the work for you, then make sure you get organised and do this ahead of time. Summer is the busiest time of the year due to the demand and so you may have to ring round a few companies to find one that can cover your date.

Getting in contact as soon as you can, could save you a lot of time, stress and money, all of which you can put into other aspects of your move. If you are unsure of where to look for reputable removal companies, then visit the BAR (British Association of Removers) website where you can find an entire list of those in your area.

Make sure you also get in contact with us at Hoults to check our availability for your preferred dates. We will always try our best to accommodate your requirements and provide a stress-free service, no matter what time of the year you're moving.

Prepare as early as possible

Once you have found and secured your moving company, make sure that you have a plan of what will happen on move day. Your moving company should provide a move plan when you receive your quotation.

Make sure that you contact your friends and family, if you think you'll need a spare pair of hands to help with packing up your belongings. The more people that participate, the easier your move will be.

If you need to be around on move day, make sure you book the day off work with plenty of time in advance. The last thing you want to be doing is stressing about booking your days off, when you have a big move coming up.

Don't accidentally pack your essentials

No matter whether you are packing yourself or getting the removal company to do it for you, you need to make sure you have some things on hand during the day. The British summer months can be surprisingly hot and so there are some things you should keep on hand to ensure you are as comfortable as possible on move day.

We recommend having a spare pair of clothes on hand. If you are helping with the labour work, you may get very hot and sweaty... so make sure you have some lightweight, breathable, loose-fitting clothes to change into if necessary. You will also need to make sure you have sun-cream nearby at all times, just to be sure that you are protected from the sun when moving to and from properties.

Drink plenty of water

It's important to stay hydrated, especially when you are moving boxes from A to B in the warm summer months. You may not have air conditioning in your properties, and even if you do it'll be off anyway with the doors being constantly open, so you need to do what you can in order to keep your family and the removal men cool.

Prepare bottles of water in advance, for your family and the moving team that will last for the duration of moving day. This will save you a lot of time, as you don't want to keep running to shops when you have a move to be focusing on.

Cold damp towels are also a great way to keep everyone involved nice and cool. The safer you keep the team, the smoother your move will go and the more productive the days will be.

Take care of children and pets

Moving day can be stressful as it is for children and pets due to unfamiliar, hectic surroundings, so having them around for a summer move may pose even more things to consider. Finding a cool spot for them to stay in for the duration of the move may be tricky when everyone is constantly moving around.

We recommend for their safety, that you arrange for a friend or relative to take care of them for the day, or check your animals into a pet day care facility to avoid the additional stress for them, as well as yourself.
