As 2022 is drawing to a close, we thought there is no better time to reflect on this years most popular removal destinations in the North East. Here at Hoults, we move our customers all over the UK and even internationally, however we wanted to dedicate this post to our favourite North Easterly destinations.

1. Newcastle Upon Tyne

Unsurprisingly, our most popular destination of 2022 was Newcastle Upon Tyne. Out of the total amount of moves we carried out this year, 30% of these were moving our customers to the Newcastle area.

A recent satisfactory survey concluded that Newcastle is one of the best places to live in the UK, with over 50% of locals saying they are very satisfied with their quality of life. It is also ranked as one of the best places to live for families due to the high standard of schooling and education. The city is home to many outstanding primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities, so there are a lot of options when choosing where to send your child.

There is also a wide range of job opportunities in Newcastle, with over 8,000 registered businesses operating in the city and the surrounding area. This number is constantly growing as Newcastle's economic growth is on a steady increase. There are a number of large organisations based in Newcastle such as: Greggs, Goldsmiths, Tommee Tippee, Virgin Money UK and The Newcastle Building Society. As you can see, there are a range of industries available for people who are looking for work in Newcastle, which means the employment rate is pretty successful.

This vibrant city is very attractive to people who are looking for a new place to live or work, and so it isn't surprising that it ranked as our top destination for 2022.

2. Whitley Bay

Our second most popular destination, in 2022, was Whitley Bay. To put this into context, this year we moved approximately 10% of our customers to the area.

Whitley Bay became a popular destination in the late Victorian period due to it's glorious seafront and promenade. Today, this seaside towns popularity is driven by its convenient location, being in close proximity to the Tyne and Wear area. You can get to Newcastle in less than half an hour which makes it an attractive place to live for those who work in the city.

Like Newcastle, Whitley Bay is also a great place to live for those moving with family. The schools in the area have received recent 'outstanding' results in their Ofsted inspections and you will be spoilt for choice with a range of primary and high schools to choose from. In terms of socialising, the promenade, which runs along the sea front, is a great place to spend quality time with family and friends. Shops, bars, cafes and restaurants line the promenade as the towns main 'hangout' during the summer months.

This tranquil seaside town is a great place to live, especially if you are looking for somewhere that is family-friendly, but still in close proximity to the cities hustle and bustle.

3. Durham

Another popular destination for our customers this year was Durham, with around 5% of our total removals, in 2022, being to here.

Durham is a great place to move as the city is full of history and there is plenty to do. It is almost guaranteed that you will never run out of things to do, with many museums to explore, such as the Durham Museum or the Oriental Museum, and a variety of retail shops to indulge in.

As well as this, you will have great towns and other thriving cities right on your doorstep. Durham is located in County Durham and here you will find towns like Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Consett, all of which we moved customers to this year as well. Newcastle is also relatively close by, being just 30 minutes away, which could open up great job opportunities too.

Durham is constantly being developed which makes it a very attractive city for people who are looking to move home.

4. Gateshead

Our fourth most popular destination in 2022 was Gateshead. Out of our total number of moves this year, 5% of our customers moved to this large town in Tyne and Wear

People are attracted to Gateshead's incredible architecture which is part of the heritage and history here. The town is home to some lovely neighbourhoods too, most of which are surrounded by stunning greenery. Gateshead is a popular place for people to live if they are looking for an outdoor lifestyle and who enjoy outdoor activities such as walking, cycling and running.

Gateshead is a popular destination as, overall, the town has very low levels of crime. Like anywhere though, it is important that you have your wits about you and ensure you take any precautions you would usually, like locking your bike up whilst you go shopping, for example. Crimes do take place in the area, however criminal damage and arson cases are very uncommon.

This town offers a high standard of life for it's residents and so we are not surprised it has ranked as one of our top destinations for 2022.

5. Sunderland

Our fifth and final most popular destination of 2022 is Sunderland. Similar to Gateshead and Durham, this year around 5% of our total moves were to the city of Sunderland.

This city is a great place to live as it has that small-town feel to it, which means it's a little more relaxed than the likes of Newcastle. Surrounded by beautiful beaches and divine countryside, you also get the best of both worlds living here and opens doors for plenty of exploring.

It was reported this year that Sunderland is actually considered to be one of the best places to live for people who are under 30 and the cities residents are some of the happiest in the UK. This is due to a few main factors, such as house prices, income and low crime levels. Living in Sunderland could reduce your household expenditure significantly, as food, fuel and even home and vehicle insurance come out cheaper in comparison to other UK cities. The city is also ranked as the 7th safest place to live in the UK, with CrimeRate reporting the overall crime rate in 2021 was 108 crimes per 1,000 people.

The cities history is also a big pull factor for people looking to move here, as well as the high quality of life and the affordable housing prices.
